Lyndale the Literary Lion Lesson Plan

TAKS Objectives: 1,2,3,4 The student will: TEKS: 9B- establish purpose for reading and listening such as to be informed, to follow directions, and to be entertained; 9C- retell or act out the order of important events in stories; 9E- draw and discuss visual images based on text descriptions; 9 I- represent test information in different ways, including story maps, graphs, and charts; 10A respond to stories and poems in ways that reflect understanding and interpretation in discussion, in writing, and through movement, music, art and drama; 11B- distinguish fiction from nonfiction, including fact and fantasy and 11D-compare communication in different forms such as contrasting a dramatic performance with a print version of the same story or comparing story and variants.

Day 1 Time: 45 Min. The teacher will read the story, “The Lion and The Mouse: An Aesop’s fable.” (retold by Carol Jones) to the class. Prior to the program, students will read and complete a story map on the above reading selection.

Story Map: Have students fold a rectangular shaped piece of paper into four equal parts. Student will write the title and author in the upper left corner of the paper. Have the students label each section with the following headings: Following a class discussion about the various story elements, the teacher will guide the students though the story map below. Students will provide illustrations of the events covered on the story map.

3. Plot What happened in the story?
4. And why did it happen?

Day 2 Time: 45 Min. After the program, the teacher will discuss the contents of the story with the students to check for understanding and recall of the story, “The Lion and The Mouse,” by Lyndale the Literary Lion. Students will recall facts and complete a story map on the story selection.

Story Map: Have students fold a rectangular shaped piece of paper into four equal parts. Student will write the title and author in the upper left corner of the paper. Have the students label each section with the following headings: Following the program, the teacher will assist students in recalling the various parts of the story. Students will independently complete the second story map. Students will provide illustrations of the events covered on the story map.

Day 3 Time: 45 Min. Using a Venn Diagram and their story maps, students will compare and contrast the two versions of, “ The Lion and the Mouse,” retold by Carol Jones and “The Lion and the mouse,” by Lyndale the Literary Lion.

Days 4 and 5 Time: 1 hour and 30 Min. Story Creation: Students will create and illustrate their own story of the Lion and the Mouse. Students will publish, read and share their stories with their classmate. Story Book: This activity teaches the student the structure of books and helps them to organize their thoughts and writing. Skills practiced: writing, book structure, drawing.

To make a book:

1. Think of a plot for your book. Write your story events.

2. Create and write the title for your book

3. Write the table of contents for your book ( list the major contents in page order)

4. Write the index for your book (list the major contents in alphabetical order) There are two book pages on each printed page. Have the students cut each page in half along the dotted line. Staple the pages together at the left of the page.
